Beyond Good & Evil 2
As a gamer I am pretty excited by the upcoming sequel to Beyond Good & Evil, especially as it is being presented as a fun online game to play with friends. That said, as a fan of the first game the upcoming sequel to the hit PS2 game is leaving me feeling kind of bitter.
The sequel to the original game was announced in May 2008, but many had been hoping to a direct sequel to the game as opposed to the prequel that is now being showcased. It didn’t help that teaser trailers had been released showcasing our favorite cast from the original game.
These trailers had gamers excited for what was to come in the world created by Ubisoft, and while this new direction that the company seems to be going in appears exciting it doesn’t feel the same. With a whole new cast set before the birth of the original game’s protagonist, Jade.
Gabrielle Shrager, the narrative director at Ubisoft Montpellier, had this to say about the upcoming game: “Welcome to System 3…Our story takes place before the birth of Jade in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural human society in a distant solar system. It is a time when corporations create hybrids in their labs and enslave them to colonize the stars in order to compete for power and cosmic resources. With our crew of crazy and unforgettable characters, we fight in the name of freedom and the right to determine our own fate among the stars. And we will helm massive star-faring vessels through territories as spectacular as they are dangerous.”
The games youtube video added some description on what’s to come as well: “System 3 has become the center of interstellar trade and colonization in the Milky Way of the 24th century, thanks to the creation of Hybrid slaves. While private enterprises fight over resources and power, the first colonists weave together the rich and diverse spiritual and cultural heritages of Old Earth to give meaning to their existence. In this new era of piracy, we will rise from lowly pirate to legendary captain at the helm of massive star-faring vessels, adventuring alongside crews of colorful characters to fight for freedom and the right to determine our own fate among the stars!”
With a sequel that now supports co-op and solo play, the game now feels far and removed from the original Beyond Good and Evil. Though whether that’s a bad or good thing remains to be seen. As it stands I’m hopefully optimistic about the upcoming game – though I’m still hoping another game will come that will continue our old adventure.
